How to show up in ChatGPT answers as a coach or consultant

Why this question matters now
Many prospective clients now ask an AI assistant for a recommendation before they search Google or ask a colleague. EMARKETER reports that ChatGPT has passed 800 million weekly users and that Google's AI Overviews appear in at least 16 percent of searches, citing Search Engine Land. For an independent coach or consultant, the practical question is simple: when someone asks for help in your area, does your name come up?
Check where you stand first
Open ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity and ask the same two questions in each: "Who is [your name] and what do they do?" and "Who would you recommend as a [your type of coach or consultant] for [your kind of client]?" Note whether you appear, whether the description is accurate, and whom the tools name instead. Saving the answers gives you a baseline to compare against in a month.
What makes an assistant more likely to name you
- One clear description. A sentence that says whom you help and with what, used at the top of your website, in your LinkedIn headline and in every bio.
- Profiles that agree. The same name, photo and description on your website, LinkedIn and other profiles, so the tools can tell they belong to one person.
- Pages that answer real questions. Short, direct answers to the questions clients ask before they hire you, written on your own site.
- Structured data. Schema markup that states your name, role, location, services and profile links in a form machines read reliably.
- Mentions elsewhere. Podcast appearances, guest articles, directory listings and credits on client sites, each describing you in similar terms.
What does not help
Hidden instructions aimed at AI tools, pages stuffed with keywords and paid lists of fake reviews tend to fail, and they can damage trust if noticed. The tools are trying to find credible sources, so the reliable approach is to become one.
How long it takes
Changes to your own site and profiles are often picked up by search engines within a few weeks. AI assistants refresh their information at different speeds, and mentions on other sites build up gradually, so most people see a clearer difference over two to four months.
Frequently asked questions
Can I pay to appear in ChatGPT answers?
Not in the ordinary answers. ChatGPT decides whom to mention from the information it can find and trust, which is why a clear website, consistent profiles and outside mentions matter.
Do I need a website to show up in ChatGPT?
It helps a great deal. A website is the one source you fully control, and it is where AI tools and search engines look to confirm who you are and what you do.
Is this the same as GEO?
Yes, largely. Generative engine optimisation is the industry term for the same work. This guide describes it in the terms most coaches and consultants use when they ask about it.
If you would rather hand this over
This is part of what I do for clients. The AI Visibility Sprint covers most of it, or you can book a call to talk it through.
